Thinking About Your First Bodybuilding Show In Michigan? Here's Where To Start
Maybe you've been training for a few years. Friends keep asking if you compete. You've watched a show or two and thought, I could do that.
Stepping on stage is one of the most rewarding goals in fitness. It's also one of the most demanding. Here's what first-timers in the Grand Rapids area should know before they commit.
1. Pick your show and division early
Michigan hosts amateur bodybuilding and physique shows throughout the year. Choose one at least 16–20 weeks out so you have time to diet without rushing.
Then pick a division. Classic Physique, Men's Physique, Bikini, Figure and open Bodybuilding each reward a different look. A good coach can tell you which one fits your frame today.
2. Get an honest assessment
Most first-timers underestimate how lean they need to be. Before you start, get an experienced eye on your physique. A coach will spot lagging body parts, estimate how much fat you need to lose and tell you whether to compete this season or build for one more year.
3. Keep training heavy while you diet
Your goal during prep is to keep every pound of muscle while the fat comes off. That means lifting hard right up to the end, not switching to light weights and high reps. Machines like the pendulum squat and plate-loaded presses help you keep intensity high when energy runs low.
4. Make nutrition easy
Prep diets work when they're consistent. Weighing, cooking and packing every meal can wear you down fast. Many competitors lean on meal prep so the plan stays on track during busy weeks.
5. Practice posing — a lot
Posing is the most overlooked part of prep. Great physiques lose to good ones because of weak presentation. Start practicing at least 8–12 weeks out, several times a week, in front of full-length mirrors. Hold each pose until it feels natural under pressure.
6. Don't do it alone
Prep is physically and mentally tough. Training around people who've done it before makes a huge difference. They'll push you on hard days and remind you why you started.
